Plants, keep cool and save

We all know that planting trees is good for the environment, but did you know that investing in your garden can also help to keep your house cool in summer?

According to a recent report released by the Southern African National Biodiversity Institute, average temperatures are expected to climb by at least three degrees Celsius over the next few years. So keeping cool is going to become a top priority. Not sure where your garden fits in?

Here’s how :

  • Plant tall trees (with non-invasive root systems) close to your home. The trees will form a canopy over your roof that will shade your home and keep it cool.
  • Limit the amount of direct sunlight entering your home by planting leafy shrubs or trees in front of windows.
  • Create a dedicated plant corner in a warm room. Plants are nature’s own air conditioners – they recycle and cool the air surrounding them.

A cooler home means that you’ll save on air conditioning costs, but your garden adds to your bottom line in other ways too.

  • An established garden has become an increasingly important selling point for homes on the market. In South Africa we enjoy an outdoors lifestyle and a lush garden adds a whole extra living space to your home.
  • An established herb and vegetable garden is also a huge selling point, but that aside, you’ll also reap the rewards while you’re there. Fresh healthy vegetables a few metres from your kitchen – what could be easier, and cheaper?
