DIY and how-to

Hands holding soil with a small green plant over dark earth.

Planting trees doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these simple steps to get started.

YOU WILL NEED:
– Compost and bone meal or superphosphate
– A spade
– Fertilizer such as 2:3:2
– Insecticide granules
– Mulch

INSTRUCTIONS

Start by digging a hole slightly bigger than the size tree. Once the hole has been dug, mix the half the compost with the soil. Place some of the mix at the bottom of the hole. When planting, keep in mind that the soil level in the bag before planting must be level with the surrounding soil when planted. Add a handful of bonemeal to the bottom of the hole. Remove the bag encasing the tree and place the plant in the hole, making sure not to disturb the roots. Fill the hole with the rest of the soil/compost mix and firm down the edges. Scatter the 2:3:2 around the surface and water well. For conifers, lightly sprinkle insecticide granules to prevent insect attacks.
