Heat Super Heroes

The hot months of summer lie ahead, so it is time to fill your garden with summer seedlings that can cope in even the warmest conditions.

Here are some ideas :

  • Portulaca is a very hardy groundcover that thrives in hot, dry areas of the garden. It produces beautiful glossy flowers in every shade imaginable, except blue.
  • Petunias are fast growing seedlings which will quickly provide you with a mass display of colour. Cut them back regularly and feed them with liquid fertilizer to keep them looking good.
  • Marigolds are ideal for borders and edging as they only grow to a height of about 30cm. They are available in vibrant shades of orange, red, gold and yellow.
  • Periwinkle copes very well with hot, dry conditions. It is available in varieties with pink, mauve and white flowers.
  • Gazanias quickly cover large areas of soil in hot, dry conditions. They grow particularly well on sloping banks and rockeries, and they’re indigenous too!
