Plant a Pot of Lilies

It’s lily season, and these beautiful bulbs grow very well in containers. Follow our step-by-step guide below and you’ll soon have a beautiful pot of lilies to brighten up your outdoor areas, or to give as a gift to a friend:

You will need the following –  lily bulbs, a container with drainage holes, drainage material (such as pebbles), potting soil, bonemeal, a trowel and a watering can.

  • Line the bottom of the container with drainage material, like pebbles or stones.
  • Cover the stones with potting soil, filling the pot to about 12cm from the top.
  • Add in a handful or two of bonemeal and mix in well.
  • Firm the soil down and place your lily bulbs on the surface. Space the bulbs about 20cm apart and push any roots at the base of the bulbs into the soil. Cover the bulbs with about 8cm of soil and firm down well.
  • Water the container well, until water runs out of the drainage holes at the bottom.
  • Continue to water your lilies daily (containers dry out very quickly) and feed two-weekly with liquid fertiliser.
  • Place your container on an outdoor patio or window sill in full sun or dappled shade.
