DIY and how-to

It’s the backdrop for your family picnics, the space where your kids will play and your pets will spend most of their time. So don’t overlook your lawn care.

You may think that taking care of your lawn is simple, but since it’s one of the hottest months of the year, your manicured lawn can quickly turn brown and brittle. Follow our top tips to give your lawn some extra TLC during summer:

  1. Feed your lawn

Invest in a specially formulated lawn fertiliser, such as Bio Ganic Lawns, and apply in the early morning while it is still cool. Water well afterwards. Make a note in your diary to feed your lawn at 4- to 6-week intervals.

  1. Top-dress your lawn

Use a specially formulated lawn dressing (not topsoil, which may contain unwanted weed seeds) to level out uneven patches and to stimulate spring growth. Tip the contents of the lawn-dressing package onto the grass and use the back of a rake to spread the dressing. Fill in any bare patches with a thicker layer of dressing.

  1. Target any weeds that pop up

Pesky weeds are more than just a nuisance, they can do some serious damage to your lawn if left unchecked. Either pull them out by hand or use a broadleaf weed killer in targeted areas. If you’re not sure what to use, bring a sample of the weed into your closest Stodels Garden Centre and ask one of our garden experts to advise a suitable weed killer.

  1. Bring out the lawn mower regularly

Mow your lawn at least fortnightly, and make sure that you never cut off more than a third of each blade of grass. This ensures the roots remain shaded from the sun. Make sure your mower blades are sharp to prevent tearing of the grass as it’s cut.

  1. Water in the early morning

Watering your lawn in the early morning allows the moisture to get down into the root systems before the heat of the sun evaporates it. Water twice a week during the heat of summer.
