Winter care for cats

DIY and how-to

For owners of cats, winter can be a difficult time. Being indoors for an extended time can be difficult for your cat and the lack of outside time will start to drive him or her mad. In many cases, it can also lead to destructive behaviour. However, there are steps you can take to prevent these winter blues.

Exercise

Getting enough exercise is crucial for cats in winter. Here are a few tips to keep your pet happy this winter:

  • Use a toy with a feather or a bell to get your cat moving. You’ll be surprised how much exercise an animal can get from playing indoors.
  • Set up a daily routine to play with your cat. This will ensure he or she is getting daily exercise.
  • Try using catnip on toys. Cats can spend hours frolicking with toys covered in catnip.
  • Invest in a tiered cat tower. This will give them a place of their own to climb and scratch.
  • Make sure your cat has a warm place to sleep. Create a spot where your cat has blankets or purchase a pet bed.

Safety

It is highly recommended that you keep your cat indoors during harsh winter conditions. If you insist on keeping your cat outside, follow these tips to keep your cat safe during winter months.

  • Ensure your cat gets enough food; he or she will need the extra energy to stay warm. Also, ensure your cat has fresh water to prevent them from drinking harmful water from swimming pools or ponds.
  • Check your car before you leave; cats love the warmth of a car and will rest underneath them.
  • Wipe your cat’s paws when he or she comes inside; cats can ingest harmful chemicals used to clean roads when licking their feet.
  • Clean up any spilt anti-freeze; cats and other animals are naturally attracted to the smell, and ingesting it can be fatal.
